What are the disadvantages of AC charging?

You see, AC charging works by converting the alternating current from the power grid into direct current that the battery can store. This conversion process is relatively slow, and the power transfer rate is limited.

For instance, if you’ve got a typical home AC charger with a power output of around 7 kW, it can take several hours to fully charge an EV with a large battery capacity. Say you have an EV with a 60 kWh battery. At 7 kW, it would take about 8.5 hours to charge from 0 to 100%. That’s a long time, especially if you’re in a hurry. It’s like waiting for paint to dry. You can’t just sit around and twiddle your thumbs while your car is charging. This slow speed can be a real pain in the neck, especially for people who are always on the go or for those who rely on their vehicles for work.

2. Limited Range Extension

Because of the slow charging speed, AC charging isn’t great for quickly extending the range of your EV. If you’re on a long road trip and need to top up your battery to reach your next destination, AC charging might not be the best option. You’d have to stop for a long time at a charging station, and that can really eat into your travel time.

Let’s say you’re driving across the country and you stop at an AC charging station. You might have to spend a few hours there just to get enough charge to make it to the next station. In contrast, a DC fast charger can give you a significant range boost in just 30 minutes or so. This limited range – extension ability can be a deal – breaker for some EV owners, especially those who frequently take long – distance trips.

3. Infrastructure Requirements

Setting up an AC charging infrastructure can be a bit of a hassle. First of all, you need to have a proper electrical supply. For a home charger, you need to make sure your home’s electrical system can handle the load. If your electrical panel is old or under – sized, you might have to upgrade it, which can be expensive.

For public charging stations, there are even more challenges. You need to find a suitable location, get the necessary permits, and install the charging equipment. And then there’s the issue of maintenance. AC chargers need to be regularly maintained to ensure they’re working properly. Any malfunction can lead to charging problems, and that can be frustrating for EV owners.

4. Efficiency Loss

During the process of converting AC power to DC power for the battery, there’s some energy loss. This means that not all of the electricity you’re paying for actually goes into charging the battery. The efficiency of AC charging can vary, but it’s generally lower compared to DC charging.

This energy loss not only means you’re getting less bang for your buck, but it also has an environmental impact. More energy is being wasted, which is not great in a world where we’re trying to be more energy – efficient. It’s like pouring some of your gas out of the tank before you even start driving.

5. Compatibility Issues

AC charging can also have compatibility issues. Different EV models have different charging requirements, and not all AC chargers are compatible with all vehicles. Some older EVs might not be able to take advantage of the higher – power AC chargers, and some newer models might require specific types of charging connectors.

This can be a real headache for EV owners. They might show up at a charging station only to find that their vehicle can’t be charged there. And for charging station operators, it means they have to invest in a variety of chargers to accommodate different vehicles, which can be costly.

6. Space Constraints

AC charging stations can take up a fair amount of space. If you’re setting up a charging station at home, you need to have a dedicated area for the charger. And in a public setting, multiple AC chargers can require a large parking area.

This can be a problem, especially in urban areas where space is at a premium. It might be difficult to find a suitable location for a large – scale AC charging station, and even if you do, the cost of the land can be high.
